The following is an abridgement of an article originally published on the WorkSafe NZ website.
A major player in New Zealand's kiwifruit industry, has committed to a significant safety initiative following a serious workplace accident. This initiative, accepted by WorkSafe as an enforceable undertaking, comes after a worker suffered severe injuries in April 2022 when struck by a reversing forklift at their facility. The incident led to the amputation of the victim’s lower left leg below the knee.
WorkSafe's investigation revealed deficiencies in the company's traffic management plan, particularly in segregating forklifts from pedestrian areas—a critical oversight that contributed to the accident. Recognising the heightened risks during harvest season due to increased activity and limited workspace, WorkSafe emphasised the importance of managing such risks effectively within the industry.
In response, the company has committed to implementing safety measures totalling half a million dollars, including:
Catalijne Pille from WorkSafe highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in advancing workplace safety, specifically in using algorithms and sensors to detect pedestrians and prevent accidents.
WorkSafe has halted legal proceedings against the company in favour of monitoring their progress on these initiatives, reserving the right to resume prosecution if necessary. This approach underscores the commitment shown to prioritising health and safety improvements, which, according to WorkSafe, offers a more constructive outcome than legal action alone.
