SafeWork NSW has released online tools, including a self-assessment and guide, to help officers understand and meet their WHS due diligence duties.

The following is an abridgement of an article originally published by SafeWork NSW.
SafeWork NSW has published digital resources to help organisational officers understand their statutory due diligence obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.
Under the legislation, officers have a legal duty to exercise due diligence ensuring businesses comply with health and safety requirements. The regulator noted that this responsibility includes understanding operational risks, allocating adequate resources and processes, and verifying that safety controls function effectively.
The regulator launched an online self-assessment tool to assist officers in reviewing their knowledge, identifying gaps, and incorporating improvements into their health and safety management. SafeWork NSW also developed a quick reference guide that outlines officer definitions, specific legal duties, and practical steps to achieve compliance. Upon completing the self-assessment, officers receive a tailored report outlining ratings and suggested improvement measures.
SafeWork Commissioner Janet Schorer stated,
"Due diligence is taking reasonable steps to secure safety compliance at work. It is an ongoing legal duty to keep workers, visitors and volunteers safe."
Schorer reported that industry feedback indicates some officers struggle to implement due diligence into daily operations. She urged officers to utilise the new resources to strengthen their leadership capabilities and improve safety outcomes across industry.
