The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has accepted an Offshore Project Proposal from Shell Australia to develop the Crux gas field in the Browse Basin, located off the north coast of Western Australia.
According to NOPSEMA, the proposed development consists of a platform and five production wells that will connect to the Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas facility via a 165-kilometre export pipeline.
The regulator stated the acceptance follows a nearly two-year assessment process that included a public comment period. NOPSEMA noted it will publish a statement of reasons and the final proposal document within 10 days of the decision.
The authority confirmed the Crux development remains subject to further regulatory approvals, including an accepted environment plan, a well operations management plan, and a facility safety case, before any activity can commence.
